Like Minds
Two friends and a common desire to create something
unique and meaningful: that shared goal united MC E-Prez and DJ Lowphat sometime
around 2003. Lowphat had been DJ'ing shows and writing music for several
years while E-Pres had been crafting thoughtful rhymes and performing at open
mics around the Tacoma area. Drawing inspiration from each other's work,
the two started collaborating and hitting up the local clubs to perform live.
As their music connected with more and more people and their sound developed
into something truly vital, it was clear that this group had something that
needed to be shared with the world.
Like Mind's sound is surgical: completely thought out and exact in execution.
Every snare, verb, and thought placed in exactly the right place. E-Prez'
unique delivery really separates him from the majority of MCs today, with
strained and sometimes melodious vocals taking to issue various political and
social woes of our time. Lowphat's tracks go from sparse beat-driven
affairs such as That Sound to the more orchestral and full sounding tracks like
Soldier and Coasten. The interplay of these two artists really bring the
tracks alive in a way few groups can achieve on record. On
June 9th, 2005 DJ Lowphat(aka Ryan Hade) died in a motorcycle accident.
Ryan left behind a lot of great friends and music and we were all sad to see him
go. Ryan passed away just as he was finishing work on Like Mind's first
album to be released by us here at Narcofunk. In one conversation around
that time, Ryan talked about really wanting to put out music as a way of
connecting with others and sharing common experiences. To that end,
Narcofunk Records is releasing Like Mind's full length album to the web in
the hopes that people out there will connect with it and appreciate the talent
of these two individuals.
